Zac Hug found his calling in writing Hallmark rom-coms—and so can you
With Valentine’s Day approaching, romance is in the air—and on the page. Zac Hug is a screenwriter who has built a career crafting romantic comedies that bring comfort, humour and heart to audiences. We spoke with Hug about his work with Hallmark, and how he is helping aspiring writers shape their own love stories for the screen with a new, non-credit online course.
Registration open for Writing the Romantic Comedy courses with screenwriter Zac Hug
Registration is open for our two new continuing education courses on writing the romantic comedy. Created by experienced screenwriter and UBC instructor Zac Hug, these courses will help you tell your own romantic comedy story by learning to create the outline and script. First course runs January 13 through February 17.

Redefining the undergraduate learning experience in Creative Writing
The Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF) supports UBC’s strategic plan by advancing transformative learning at the university. TLEF projects can be small or large in scope, from creating innovative resources for a single course, to redefining the learning experience for an entire department. UBC’s School of Creative Writing instructors attempted the latter option, and strengthened their cohesion in the process.

Meet MFA Creative Writing alum A.W. Hopkins. Recently A.W. completed work on his first feature film, a comedy called “Indian Road Trip”. For this film he won Best BC Director at the 2020 Whistler Film Festival and Honourable Mention for Best Screenplay in the Borsos Competition.

Meet MFA Creative Writing alum Jennica Harper. Jennica is a Vancouver-based TV writer and poet. She’s the showrunner and co-creator of the comedy series JANN, starring Jann Arden. Her most recent book of poetry is Bounce House.
Creative Writing alumnus receives STORYHIVE grant for Indigenous-focused film
UBC Creative Writing alumnus Shaelyn Johnston launched her first animated film thanks to a $20,000 grant from Telus STORYHIVE. Her film, The Healing Dance, was one of 30 films chosen by a panel to receive funding under the first-ever Indigenous Storytellers Edition of the STORYHIVE competition.
