Marie Leofeli Barlizo is a Filipino-Chinese playwright from Montreal. She is the playwriting mentor at Black Theatre Workshop’s Artist Mentorship Program and an instructor at the National Theatre School.
UBC Creative Writing hires first tenure-track faculty member in graphic forms
The School of Creative Writing welcomes cartoonist and educator Sarah Leavitt to its faculty as an assistant professor specializing in graphic forms. Leavitt is the School’s first tenure-track faculty member in this genre.
Award-winning speculative fiction author Nalo Hopkinson joins UBC
Award-winning speculative fiction author Nalo Hopkinson has joined the School of Creative Writing as a professor. She will teach courses in speculative fiction and will also work to establish a centre for the Black Speculative Imagination.
Alum interview with Jessica Johns, MFA ’19
Jessica Johns is a nehiyaw aunty and member of Sucker Creek First Nation in Treaty 8 territory in Northern Alberta. Her short story “Bad Cree” won the 2020 Writers’ Trust Journey Prize and won silver at the 2020 National Magazine Awards.
Michelle Good wins major awards for novel Five Little Indians

Meet MFA Creative Writing alum A.W. Hopkins. Recently A.W. completed work on his first feature film, a comedy called “Indian Road Trip”. For this film he won Best BC Director at the 2020 Whistler Film Festival and Honourable Mention for Best Screenplay in the Borsos Competition.
