My name is Shelly Kawaja and I live in Norris Point, Newfoundland and Labrador. I am a first-year optional residency student and this is my first time doing a comics course. Girl Cancer is about my sister’s diagnosis with stage 4 colon cancer and how not only did I find the news devastating, but it also made me think that cancer had intruded onto my family too many times and would soon come for me too. My mind spiralled down a rabbit hole of sadness, worry and fear. Drawing this comic allowed me to find some humour in that.
