The UBC Creative Writing Program is pleased to announce Alicia Elliott as the 2017-2018 Geoffrey and Margaret Andrew Fellow. Alicia Elliott is a Tuscarora writer living in Brantford, Ontario with her husband and daughter. Her writing has been published by The Malahat Review, The Butter, Room, Grain, The New Quarterly, CBC, Globe and Mail, Vice, Maclean’s, Maisonneuve and Today’s Parent. She’s currently Associate Nonfiction Editor at Little Fiction | Big Truths, and a consulting editor with The New Quarterly. Her essay, “A Mind Spread Out on the Ground” won a Gold 2017 National Magazine Award. Elliott will work on a short story collection about contemporary Haudenosaunee women during the tenure of her Andrew Fellowship residency. She is also working on a book of essays.
The goal of the Geoffrey and Margaret Andrew fellowship is to give young creative people who are from developing countries, or who are Indigenous, Aboriginal, or First Nations from Canada or other countries, an opportunity to broaden their artistic experience while fostering greater international understanding through cultural exchange in Canada. It is the further goal of the Fellowship to honour Geoffrey and Margaret Andrew and their lifetime commitment to fostering greater respect and understanding for culture and education within Canada and internationally.
The one-month fellowship includes travel to Vancouver, accommodation at UBC, and a $5000 award. Elliott will divide her time between writing and community engagement. Her residency begins on January 22, 2018.
