The School of Creative Writing is pleased to congratulate Toke Adejoye, MFA. Toke’s graduate thesis is an Afro-speculative fiction novel entitled The Crossing.
After six years of studying law and being called to the Nigerian Bar and three years of working as a professional screenwriter and creative executive, Toke started the MFA program with a focus on telling Nigerian/African stories in diverse forms whether it be literary/contemporary fiction or speculative fiction (fantasy). She recently discovered a soft spot for creative nonfiction and she is currently outlining a project that would entail writing a collection of essays on obscure African and Afro-influenced religions. In her time at UBC, she was editor-in-chief of PRISM international.
Toke’s literary-speculative fiction novel is set in an alternate Lagos that once prospered economically through crude oil extraction. When Lagos runs out of its crude oil supply, it turns against its own citizens, particularly the lower class, by manipulating them into donating body parts that would be transformed into a novel brand of fossil fuel and crude oil replacement, all in exchange for meagre monetary compensation.
