The School of Creative Writing is pleased to congratulate Kortnee Paiha, MFA. Kortnee’s graduate thesis is a novel entitled White North.
Kortnee joined the Creative Writing program after completing her Bachelor of Arts (hons.) in English at the University of Calgary in 2020. Kortnee has always loved writing and has had her short fiction published in various literary journals throughout Canada and the United States including NoD Magazine and the Avalon Literary Review. With a focus on young adult literature, Kortnee plans to continue writing for younger audiences and blend complex social issues with relatable and compelling narratives.
Kortnee’s novel, White North, is a young adult speculative fiction novel that explores the effects of climate change on Canada and mental health. The story follows a teenager struggling with the aftermath of a cataclysmic environmental disaster and the new disease it has introduced to the world. Part adventure, part coming-of-age, part science fiction, White North delves into the risks we take for family and the impact our choices can have on mental health and relationships, all against the backdrop of a ravaged planet.
