The School of Creative Writing is pleased to congratulate Emily Leduc Gagné, MFA. Emily’s graduate thesis is a collection of poetry entitled EMILY: A Bildungsroman.
Emily Leduc Gagné is a tax associate in the New York office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP where she maintains a general tax planning practice. Emily received her Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of Ottawa in 2019 (Aird & Berlis LLP Prize, Honourable Ray Lawson Scholarship, Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History Award). She began her MFA at the University of British Columbia after retiring from her 10-year career as a professional ballet dancer. Emily discovered her love of poetry in Susan Musgrave’s class, which she took three times! Her poem, Solo., was selected for the CBC Poetry Prize longlist in 2018.
This collection of poetry and prose expressed through written text and visual art offers snapshots of Emily’s life. Some of the poems are non-fiction, while others are fictional. All, however, reveal something true about the author. Each poem offers an inside look into the author’s mind and body as she emerges from the trials of the past few years. Speaking on these trials and this work, Emily says, “I have only survived. Nothing more. I am still alive.”
