Join us for a craft talk with filmmaker Tracey Deer.
Tracey is a Mohawk creator of groundbreaking film and television content. Her work includes five seasons of the award-winning series Mohawk Girls and her 2020 feature film, Beans, which won the prestigious 2020 TIFF Emerging Talent Award, presented by Ava DuVernay, and earned Tracey international acclaim as one of Variety’s 10 Screenwriters to Watch.
In this craft talk, Tracey will describe the process of writing Beans and the challenge of creating distinct and memorable characters within a political, historical story. She will also share some of the lessons learned from her work as a TV series showrunner and writer.
Speaker Biography
Tracey Deer is a Mohawk filmmaker whose two decades of experience includes co-creating, directing, and co-showrunning five seasons of Mohawk Girls. After co-executive producing on Anne with an E, Tracey filmed her debut feature Beans, which premiered at TIFF 2020 to critical acclaim, garnering Tracey the prestigious TIFF Emerging Talent Award and title as one of Variety’s 10 Screenwriters to Watch. Beans had its European premiere at the Berlinale and has secured US distribution with FilmRise.
