Access to MFA Workshops

Thank you for your interest in the UBC School of Creative Writing MFA workshops.

First, the UBC School of Creative Writing Minor Program offers many open enrolment creative writing courses in a wide range of genres. Students can register directly in these courses, with no application necessary. A full list of course descriptions can be found under Undergraduate Course Descriptions on this page.

The Creative Writing MFA is a closed program. Workshop seats in MFA courses are reserved for Creative Writing MFA students. On rare occasions, if a workshop does not fill, an instructor may consider outside applicants to the workshop. If outside applicants are being considered, they will be assessed based on the strength and suitability of their writing samples. Please be aware that instructors are not required to consider outside applicants to their workshop, and unfilled seats in a workshop are not an indicator of available seats.

Workshop seats are reserved for MFA students until later in August, at which point, should instructors choose to consider outside applicants, they will review any submitted applications for the course. Successful applicants only are notified in late August.

Because the odds of securing a seat in an MFA workshop are low, please be sure to register for other courses in order to meet your program course requirements.

Creative writing workshops cannot be taken concurrently with any schedule-conflicting courses, so, should you be accepted into a creative writing workshop, you will need to withdraw from any schedule-conflicting courses and ensure you’re below the maximum number of allowed course credits for your program before we can register you.

Please complete the form below to be considered for a seat in an MFA workshop.
