MFA Awards and Nominations



Congratulations to MFAs Carleigh Baker and Karla Comanda!

Karla Comanda is the winner of the Asian Canadian Writers Jim Wong-Chu Emerging Writers Award, based upon her poetry thesis and work with Professor Emerita Rhea Tregebov.  She has been featured in LitFest: Edmonton’s Nonfiction  Festival. Her works have appeared in Contemporary Verse 2: Poetry Lives Here, Glass Buffalo, and Paragon.


Carleigh Baker has been nominated for a Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, a $50,000 national award for her collection of short fiction Bad Endings. Carleigh is the founder of the Indigenous Reading Circle in Creative Writing and the fiction editor for Joyland. Bad Endings is also nominated for the Vancouver Book Award. The award announcement will be made November 14, 2017.
