Martin Kinch’s practice embraces film, theatre, television, opera, and radio. As a screenwriter, story editor, director and/or producer he has worked on over 50 produced screen and television projects.

Throughout his impressive career, spanning four decades and multiple Canadian cities, Martin has been at the vanguard of modern Canadian theatrical expression. He forged the movement to develop of original Canadian plays in the early 1970s. As artistic director of Theatre Passe Muraille and founder and artistic director of Toronto Free Theatre, he spearheaded the creation of alternative theatres in Canada.  As a playwright, he is a two-time finalist for the prestigious Chalmers Award. He was a drama producer at CBC Television Drama (1980-86) and artistic director of Theatre Calgary (1986-93). Throughout the 90s, he worked as writer and story editor on a number of television series (Jake and the Kid, The Hardy Boys, Dead Man’s Gun).

During his 10-year tenure (2002-12) at Vancouver’s Playwright’s Theatre Centre, Martin built the organization into a trailblazing dramaturgically focused company that nurtures and advances Canadian playwrights. He is responsible for creating several outstanding playwright-centred programs at PTC including Flying Start, The Associates Program and the PTC Writers Colony.

In PodPlays – The Quartet, a co-production of Neworld Theatre, the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival 2011, and CBC Radio One, he collaborated with Adrienne Wong to pioneer a innovative new form of site-specific radio play: the PodPlay. PodPlays are now created and produced by theatre and sound artists world-wide.

Since leaving PTC, Martin continues to and to work with independent filmmakers to develop their scripts for production.
