Joanne Arnott has published six books of poetry. Her first book, Wiles of Girlhood, (Press Gang, 1991) won the Gerald Lampert’s Award. My Grass Cradle was also published by Press Gang (1992). Ronsdale Press published Mother Time (2007) and A Night for the Lady (2013). Kegedonce Press published Steepy Mountain love poetry (2004) and Halfling Spring: an internet romance (2014, illustrations by Leo Yerxa, shortlisted for the Pat Lowther Award). She also published a book of short non-fiction (Breasting the Waves: On Writing & Healing, Press Gang, 1995), and a children’s illustrated (Ma MacDonald, illustrations by Mary-Anne Barkhouse, Women’s Press, 1993).
A Métis/mixed-blood writer, originally from Manitoba, Joanne was one of the founding members of the Aboriginal Writers Collective West Coast. She was text editor for Salish Seas: an anthology of text + image (AWCWC 2011), and co-edited with Lee Maracle and Jim Wong-Chu a Special Double Issue of Rice Paper Magazine, featuring Aboriginal and Asian Canadian Writers (2012). She has edited books of poetry by Chris Bose (Kegdonce Press), and is co-editing a collection of Vera Manuel’s works (tba). Joanne attended two Indigenous Literature Studies Association (ILSA) gatherings, where she honoured the work of Connie Fife and sharron proulx-turner.
Joanne’s essays and poetry have been included in many anthologies, including Anthology of Canadian Native Literature in English, Indigenous Poetics in Canada, Double Lives: Writers and Motherhood and Uncommon Wealth: Anthology of Poetry in English. Past volunteer with The Writers Union of Canada (National Council) and The Writers Trust (Authors’ Committee), Joanne has co-organized literary events locally and nationally. She hosted an online space for indigenous women writers, and organized a week-long master class/writing retreat for indigenous artists who are mothers and grandmothers, with Maria Campbell. She is currently Poetry Editor for Event Magazine, and working on a second nonfiction collection.
