This event kicks off Oliver Baez Bendorf’s virtual reside nce at the UBC School of Creative Writing. We’re delighted to present this public reading\, along with beloved locals Michael V. Smith and Hazel Jane Plante.

Speaker Biog raphies
Oliver Baez Bendorf is the author of three books of poetry\, most recently Consider the Rooster\, forthcoming from Nightboat Books in 2024\, and Advantages of Being Evergreen and The Spectral Wilderness. He has received fellowships and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and The Publishing Triangle. Born and raised in Iowa\, he now liv es in Colorado.
Michael V. Smith has publishe d six previous books\, which include three collections of poetry\, a memoir \, and two novels. Also an award-winning filmmaker\, drag queen\, and profe ssor\, Smith teaches at UBC Okanagan\, in Kelowna\, BC\, where he lives wit h his brilliant husband.
Hazel Jane Plante’s debut n ovel Little Blue Encyclopedia (for Vivian) (Metonymy Press\, 2019) received a Lambda Literary award. Her second novel\, Any Other City\, is forthcoming in A pril 2023 from Arsenal Pulp Press. She also releases solo music under the n ame lo-fi lioness\, write s songs and plays guitar for C ertain Women\, maintains a newsletter (Whatever Happened to Hazel Jane?)\, and helmed the podcast t4t\, which was about writing whil e trans. She lives with her gorgeous cat\, Gus\, on the unceded ancestral t erritories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh\, and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ Nations. p>
