Silvia Moreno-Garcia will speak about incorporating hybridity and cultural specificity into speculative fiction\, followed by a discussion with Profes sor Nalo Hop kinson and a Q&A with the audience.
Both authors' books wi ll be for sale at the event by the UBC Bookstore\, and the authors will be available for signing after the event. Registration is open to everyone.

Mexican by birth\, Canadian by inclination. Cachanilla and Canuck\, originally from B aja California\, she now resides in Vancouver. She has an MA in Science and Technology Studies from the University of British Columbia.
Silvia M oreno-Garcia is the author of a number of critically acclaimed novels\, inc luding Gods of Jade and Shadow (Sunburst Award for Excellence in C anadian Literature of the Fantastic\, Ignyte Award)\, Mexican Gothic (Locus Award\, British Fantasy Award\, Pacific Northwest Book Award\, Au rora Award\, Goodreads Award)\, and Velvet Was the Night (finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Macavity Award). She writes i n a variety of genres including fantasy\, horror\, noir and historical.
She has edited several anthologies\, including She Walks in Shadows (World Fantasy Award winner\, published in the USA as Cthulhu’s Da ughters). Her fiction has appeared in numerous magazines and anthologi es\, including Best American Mystery and Suspense.
