About Tariq Hussain

Tariq Hussain is a Vancouver based fiction and nonfiction writer as well as an accomplished songwriter and recording artist. He began his artistic career as a songwriter in his late twenties when he released his first album, Splat. Since then, Tariq has put out three additional full-length albums and one EP under his own name, most recently the Moonwalker EP (2013, Headless Owl Records). His album The Basement Songs earned him a Juno nomination in the late nineties and a few tracks from it received considerable airplay on Canadian rock radio including a top 20 hit. In 2010, he joined the ranks of the six-piece orchestral rock band Brasstronaut and has since released two critically acclaimed albums with the group including the Polaris Prize nominated Mount Chimaera. Tariq is currently working on a creative nonfiction book, a memoir about his experiences growing up as a first generation Canadian who dreams of playing in a rock band. He is also working on a collection of short stories. Tariq is a recent graduate of the creative writing masters program at UBC and winner of the 2011 Maxine Sevack award for creative nonfiction.
