Sara Graefe is a playwright and screenwriter. She started her career in the trenches of Canadian theatre and is a three-time winner of the National Arts Centre’s Young Playwrights Search. Her plays, which include Sadly As I Tie My Shoes, Dreamspyre and Yellow on Thursdays, have been produced as far afield as Ottawa’s National Arts Centre, Yukon’s Nakai Theatre, the Sydney Opera House, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

After completing her MFA in Creative Writing and Theatre at UBC, Sara made the leap into film. She was a screenwriter-in-residence at Norman Jewison’s prestigious Canadian Film Centre in Toronto, and has worked for many years as a screenwriter and story editor in the BC film industry. Highlights include a five-season stint in the writing room of Edgemont, CBC-TV’s Gemini and Leo award-winning teen series, and serving as an ongoing story editor for the Crazy8s short film challenge.

Current projects include Worry Wart, a new play for young audiences (in development with Vancouver’s Green Thumb Theatre) and the screenplay 6 Dates, a feature-length LGBTQ+ romantic comedy. She recently story edited the inaugural season of the web series Perfectly Natural, and is serving as dramaturge on the new Canadian play Wild Geese by UBC Creative Writing MFA alumna Jennifer Wynne Webber, in development with TheatreOne in Nanaimo.

Sara also writes and publishes creative nonfiction, and is editor of the groundbreaking CNF collectionSwelling with Pride: Queer Conception and Adoption Stories, published in 2018 by Dagger Editions/Caitlin Press.
